A day or two after graduation I left Ashdown, never to live there again. Leaving Ashdown was not my goal in life; it just turned out that way. I went to work for the KCS Railroad, and stayed there for eleven years. There was a two year interruption for Uncle Sam’s Army. My Army duty was sandwiched in between Korea and Vietnam, so I didn’t see any overseas time. I was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas for the duration. Now back to the railroad. One of the places the KCS sent me was DeQuincy, La. It was there, in 1959, that I met Jean Perkins, and in June of 1961 she became the love of my life, and my wife. There is an interesting story here. We had first met 18 years before in this same little town. But that tale has to be told over a cup of coffee.
