After graduating in ‘58 I attended Texarkana Junior College, and then East Texas Baptist College.  I left college in 1960 and set out to see the world - Dallas!  Judy Caler and I were roommates.  I worked for Reserve Life Ins. Co. until I met and married Jody Lowery.  He was attending Midwestern University on an athletic scholarship, so we moved to Wichita Falls, where our only daughter was born.  I spent the next few years making ends meet for our family, until Jody graduated from college.  By then we had moved to Arlington, Texas.  When our daughter began school,  I entered nursing school.  After graduation I worked at Arlington Memorial Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit for several years.  Jody and I were divorced in 1978, but remain close friends.

The next few years, I worked in area hospitals before accepting a position  as Administrative Assistant to the Headmaster of Ft. Worth Country Day School.  This required frequent trips to Austin, and I always enjoyed taking the scenic route, Hwy 281.  This led me through the small town of Hico, Texas.  I was captured by the friendliness of the people.

In 1982, I purchased a 100 year old house in Hico, Texas.  It became my project over the next 8 years, every weekend was spent in Hico.  I really grew to love the people and the area, and in 1985, I moved to Hico, fully intending to “retire”.  It’s easy to get involved in things in a small town, and before I knew it, I had been elected to the city council.  I served one term on the council, and three terms as Mayor of Hico.  During this time,  I received appointments to State Boards, from Governor Bill Clements, and later from Governor Ann Richards.

In 1994, I had enjoyed all I could stand of the political world, and decided not to run for re-election.  I went home to my, by now, restored home, intending once again to “retire”.

Sometimes the  Lord has plans for us, even before we realize that our lives are about to change.   I was led, through a series of circumstances, to open an assisted living facility in Hico.  It is called Honey Creek Place, a 22 apartment, state licensed facility. It is now 2008 I am still reporting to work there every day.   This has been a very successful venture for me, and I  think about selling it and retiring, but somehow retirement is just not a concept I can understand
